Unbelievable (for August writing prompt at
nexus_crossings)
Why can't things ever be easy?
"Keep your head down for a while, kid. You turned down joining the Avengers so this is something you'd have to deal with sooner or later."
For the fiftieth time in the last three days Peter groans at the text still sitting at the top of his read messages from Happy and slumps back on his bed. This wasn't how his weekend was supposed to go down. This wasn't the kind of guy he was anymore. Sitting at home and chilling is not exactly something Peter specializes in. Every time he's gone for the suit though he's broken into a panic. What if he's caught? What if he gets arrested. What if--
It started with Ned. Most of his news comes from Ned these days. His Man in the Chair takes his role very extremely seriously unless he's distracted by something else. He's gotten (marginally) better about appropriate times to talk to Peter about things but he still nearly ended up spitting out his milk carton at lunch when his best friend slides his phone over for Peter to see. The top story on the Daily Bugle's front page:
Renegade Spider Vigilante on the Loose!
"Wha....whaaaaaat is this?" Peter's scooping it up and skimming over the article with his free hand clamped over his mouth as panic grips at him. The photo is a still from one of the Youtube videos Peter uploaded a while back but the article itself is anything but dated. Spider-Man is unregistered under the Sokovia Accords and a menace to society. He's not accountable to anyone! This could be an entire gang operating to gain the public's trust and no one would know!
"I thought you'd want to see that. Isn't...isn't this bad, Peter?"
His text to Happy couldn't get out fast enough, but the only thing he'd gotten had been the reply he sat staring at on his bed now. Keep his head down? Let it all blow over. Stop being Spider-Man for a few weeks. He's done it before, surely he could do it again. Except Peter knows these streets. He knows what kinds of things folks get up to and he wants to help. Needs to help.
If something happens and you don't do something when you can then it's your fault.
"Peter! Dinner's ready!" Aunt May's voice carries through the apartment and Peter sighs before grabbing at his dresser for some clean clothes to pull on. Empty. Damn, he's gotta go to the laundromat soon again. The laundromat...with the bathroom stall that leads to the Nexus. His eyes widen at the thought. Maybe Peter can't be Queens' friendly neighborhood Spider-Man quite so much for a while, but the Nexus always needs a hand with thieves and troublemakers.
He can still help people.
Just not the same people he's used to helping for a bit.
